This paper try to focus the im portance of urban territorialities as significant sources of inform ation about social and spatial dynam ics in contem porary Brazilian cities, as well as alternative indication to m any sorts of diagnosis about urban intervention. In particular, we understand that research about social groups représentations can reveal the m ain source about the continuous re-elaboration of these territories in their day to day practices. This hypothesis becom es m ore consistent if we consider the historie and cultural relevance of central areas, in différent spatial and tim e dim ensions. Theoretical appointm ents in the first part of this article find good exam ples in som e aspects of Recife's central area (PE)
