Description
Summary:Adsorption isotherms for propene and propane on Vulcan 3G were obtained at four temperatures between 273 and 313 K and pressures up to 1 bar, using a microbalance technique. The adsorption of the two gases, and of their binary mixtures (reported in Part 1 of this study), is analysed in terms of the two-dimensional Scaled Particle equation. Whereas Henry's Law constants and isosteric enthalpies of adsorption of the two gases are of nearly equal magnitude, the cross-sectional area β/L = πσ 2 /4 of propane is found to be about 10% larger, and the lateral interaction energy parameter ε more than 20% larger, than the corresponding parameters for propene. The binary adsorption system conforms to the Ideal Adsorbed Solution model by Myers & Prausnitz, and the interaction parameter α 12 for unlike molecules (α ∼ επσ 2 /4) derived from the mixture adsorption data conforms to Berthelot's mixing rule within experimental accuracy.
