Summary:The present study aims to analyze how the Photovoice methodology, derived from visual anthropology, can be used to identify endogenous touristic resources, providing a diagnostic focused on the perspective of local residents in two districts located in north coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte , Brazil . To do so, the applied experiences were reported by the authors, showing results that point that the Photovoice fulfill the role of identifying tourism potential, as well as can become a tool for enhancement of local culture, through recognition and ownership of the images captured. It was also found that the methodology contributes to the development of a proactive and entrepreneurial attitude in residents of small towns. It is considered as an appropriate methodology to use in an initial stage of the development of community -based tourism.
