Summary: | <p><strong>Background</strong>: the project of professional life is a category of the personality that defines the goals and aspirations of the individual in the work context.</p><p><strong>Objective</strong>: to characterize the peculiarities of the project of professional life in students of medicine.</p><p><strong>Methods</strong>: a descriptive study was carried out at the "Mariana Grajales Coello” Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Medical Sciences of Holguín, from January through December of 2018. The sample was selected through a non-probabilistic sampling and was made up of 224 students, 65 graduates, 24 executives and 89 professors. For the development of the scientific tasks, different theoretical and empirical methods were combined. For processing the information descriptive statistics was used by means of percentage analysis.</p><p><strong>Results</strong>: the majority of the students (84,4 %) and graduates (89,2 %) approach the conceptualization about the professional life project, assure that it is necessary to have it prepared and recognize that in the medicine major actions are carried out to guide them. Both state as difficulties the lack of interest and motivation of the students and graduates. The students have difficulties in the content and structure of the professional life project. The teachers lack training to deal with the problem.</p><p><strong>Conclusions</strong>: inadequacies in the formation of the professional life project were identified. It is necessary that the professors of medicine work on the subject.</p>
