Summary:Brazilian family farming is characterized by its important role, analyzing social and economic issues. However, many of these farmers make the decision to develop other activities, including non-agricultural activities. The aim of the study is to analyze the profile of agroindustries decision makers, these family organizations, and identify the main factors that influenced the creation of family agroindustries. The study comprises 72 family agroindustries from Rio Grande do Sul State. The study highlights the existence of three agroindustries groups: animal, vegetable and those that using animal and vegetable raw material (mix). Furthermore, the prospect of increasing family income adding value to the raw material was the main reason for the implementation of these production units.
