The article substantiates the need to use a qualitatively new approach to the management of potential socioeconomic system of regions to achieve sustainable development. Characterized the structure of the socio-economic potential of the region as a socio-economic system, which brings together the local potentials, which are intended to promote the implementation of the basic resource potentials. They include the employment, logistical, scientific innovation, social infrastructure, budgetary, investment, export and import potentials. Characterized a number of problems that become an obstacle to the formation and development of an effective mechanism for management of potential socio-economic system.
