The purpose of such technological innovations is to improve the ability to meet the needs of those with functional blindness who use cash and face the problem of recognizing banknotes. Statistical tests were conducted with the raw data obtained to find out the proportion of correct answers and the response time separately. In each case, three-factor intra-subject variance analysis (ANOVA) was conducted, including 8 texture element designs (8 levels), denominations (six levels, including ‘empty’ banknotes) and repetitions (three levels). In these analyses, we consider the effect of denomination only to clearly compare the results of the ‘empty’ banknotes with the results of the five denominations with tactile information. An intra-subject variance analysis of the results was conducted to calculate the proportion of correct answers and response times for all participants, separately with ‘empty’ banknotes and without. In all cases, these three factors included the design options for the texture element (four levels), denominations (six levels with ‘empty’ banknotes and five without) and repetition (three levels). The experience of the Bank of Canada has been detailed in conducting an experiment to evaluate the possibility of incorporating a convex texture element and a code that will allow recognizing the denomination of the banknote by touching to a whole series of denominations of the Canadian dollar. The results of the study relate exclusively to the design options of the texture element in combination with the specific tactile code, substrate, printing and physical wear of banknotes and the technique of inspection of banknotes used in this study. Future changes may have an impact on these results. Successful recognitions can be limited by a person’s cognitive ability and serious skin defects (such as peripheral neuropathies caused by diabetes). The details of the experiment are described.
