Description
Summary:Over the past decades, cities have come to be portrayed as « gay paradises », whose tolerance and open-minded urban culture attracted numerous gay people and fostered gay liberation, whereas rural spaces and small towns have commonly been contrasted as gay deserts, as well as conservative areas where gay lives could not be lived. This article, based on interviews, explores what life gay men live in such places in the South of France. Far from urban tolerance but also from any urban/rural opposition, gay men describe a more complex picture of non-urban life, where tolerance and gay socialization do exist. This paper underlines how gay men who live in these gay deserts, create specific local resources helping them to develop their own gay identities, far away from urban gay models.
