During the Cold War, especially at the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s, both countries ended up in different extremes in the bipolar conflict. This underwent changes with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Particularly important is the way in which the North-Americans interpreted the Indian nuclear program, which from something unacceptable began to be seen as a strategic element in the North-American pursuit of a bigger rapprochement with India.
