An English sentence is make up of units that combine to contribute to an overall semantic interpretation. Each unit of the sentence bears a grammatical relation to some other unit or combination. These noun phrases and clauses also function as arguments of their predicate, and their semantic roles, roles such as “doer”, are essentially semantic relations within the larger language structure.
