Scleral buckle infection with Alcaligenes xylosoxidans

We describe a rare case of extraocular inflammation secondary to scleral buckle infection with Alcaligenes xylosoxidans. A 60-year-old female with a history of retinal detachment repair with open-book technique of scleral buckling presented with purulent discharge and irritation in the right eye tha...

A 60-year-old female with a history of retinal detachment repair with open-book technique of scleral buckling presented with purulent discharge and irritation in the right eye that had begun 4 weeks earlier and had been treated ineffectively at another hospital. Conjunctival erosion with exposure of the scleral buckle was noted. The scleral buckle was removed and cultured. The explanted material grew gram-negative rod later identified as A. xylosoxidans. On the basis of the susceptibility test results, the patient was treated by subconjunctival injection and fortified topical ceftazidime. After 4 weeks of treatment, the infection resolved.http://www.ijo.in/article.asp?issn=0301-4738;year=2014;volume=62;issue=6;spage=739;epage=741;aulast=HsuColor Doppler imaginghypertensive retinopathyresistive indexConjunctival graftprimary pterygiumrecurrent pterygiumIntraocular pressuresingleton pregnancythe number of fetusestwin pregnancyAccommodationagreementamplitude of accommodationpush-up methodIntraocular lensnon-sclera flaptransscleral pars plana suture fixationAxial lengthformulaslenspowershort eyesAcquired esotropiafavourable outcomestereopsisDiabetic retinopathyenzyme-linked immunosorbent assayimmunologyinterleukin-1βinterleukin-10proliferativePolypoidal choroidal vasculopathypreferential hyperacuity perimetryspectral-domain optical coherence tomographyMicroincisional vitreous surgeryretained intraocular foreign bodiestransconjunctival sutureless vitrectomyAS-OCTbleb morphologytrabeculectomyHorizontal muscle surgeryinferior oblique muscle recession surgerymacular thicknessoptical coherence tomographyGanglion cell complexoptical coherence tomographyretinal nerve fiber layertype 2 diabetesColor visioncolor vision testingFM 100-HueIshiharaBilateralmonosymptomatic optic neuritisMycoplasma pneumoniaeretro-bulbar optic neuritisCavernous sinus involvementchasmal involvementoptic atrophyoptic nerve sheath meningiomaDicotyledonespterygium surgerysubconjunctival foreign bodyuveal prolaseChoroiodal melanomaendoresectionvitrectomyAcrylic lenscomplicationectopic lensphacoemulsificationOculocutaneous albinismorbital plexiform neurofibromaproptosisGlisteningshydrophobic acrylicintraocular lensAlcaligenes xylosoxidansconjunctivitisscleral buckle infection
