In this paper, we will draw various examples from the case of Yiddish in order to examine three distinct stages within the continuum of governmental designations that commonly compete or co-exist alongside one another. After an overview of the official and national status of this millenary Diaspora language, we will examine the various governmental attitudes from tolerance to repression.
