Summary:The ability of stannic oxide to remove Cr VI ions from aqueous solutions by adsorption has been investigated. The mechanism of sorption of Chromate ions on SnO 2 is discussed in terms of specific anion adsorption. The influence of pH and some cations and anions on the sorption of Chromate species has also been studied. A kinetic study made over a wide range of concentration (10 −6 -10 −2 M) and temperature (303–323 K) has demonstrated the applicability of the Freundlich isotherm, with a first-order rate law being followed by adsorption as well as desorption processes. The values of the activation energy and other thermodynamic parameters have been calculated. An infrared study has shown that the surface compound formed by the interaction of the adsorbate ions and SnO 2 is stable.
