FROM THE COAST TO THE SERARES OF ARAROBÁ DE PERNAMBUCO: frontiers, local power and society in Portuguese America (1762-1822)

During the firsts centuries of colonization the more countryside areas of the Portuguese America were called deserts by the inhabitants of the urban centers by the shores. Those areas were called empty, inhospitable, and their inhabitants called savages, uncultured and barbarians. Based on this imaginary built on the countryside areas, this study aims to examine, through a series of official documents (letters, petitions, and notices), social practices and negotiations involving local authorities Village Cimbres in frontiers of Ararobá region, and the Government of Pernambuco and Portuguese crown, during the transition from the XVIIIth to the XIXth centuries.
