Summary:A methodology to estimate the percentage of impermeable areas in urban basins is presented and discussed. The approach is based on the use of high resolution images as an alternative that allows to identify object within an urban scene. The horizontal projection of the objects, as roofs, streets, gardens and sidewalks, are estimated using image segmentation techniques and fuzzy classification. The resulting thematic map is compared to the map obtained by photogrammetric restitution, showing that the proposed method makes it possible to obtain a reliable estimate of the total area of impervious objects.
