The innovation and the improvement of business performance in the provinces of the Republic of Cuba

The economic development success of a country is closely related to its National Innovation System (N.I.S.) (Nelson, 2013). Our research question is about the today’s situation of innovation in the Republic of Cuba, because it could be the seed of a hypothetical S.I.N. So, our aim is to analyze the existence of statistically significant differences in Cuban small businesses performance by regions for the period 2011-2014 taking into account innovations and rationalizations implemented during the period 2006-2009. We also study whether the environment favors innovation. The results show that provinces with an index of innovations and rationalizations above average, get higher performance. In addition, we observe how those provinces that are in less complex environments, have a lower propensity to perform innovations.
