Summary:The article deals with history of regular Byzantine forces in VII – beginning of the VIII c. The author’s attention is focused on loss of fighting efficiency of palace guard. Similar detachments of imperial guard were disbanded. The solders and military commanders in scholae palatinae (candidati, scribones, spatharii) replaced themes regular forces. As the result, strength of the regular contingents were increased in mid– VIII c.
