Description
Summary:Languages have affected each other because of several reasons such as religion, migration, hegemony and conquests throughout history. This interaction has been deeply observed among the Turkish language and the languages of the nations in the Balkan geography. Serbian is one of the important languages that this interaction has been seen. The Turcism dictionary of Ðorđe Popović titled as “Turske i Druge İstocanske Reci u Našem Jeziku” has been published in Belgrade in 1884 with Cyrillic alphabet in Serbian. The dictionary is one of the important turcism dictionaries that have been published in Serbia in the 19th century. The dictionary is composed of 4988 articles and the Turkish words or the words that passed from Arabic and Persian via Turkish are examined. The “annexes” part where location and person’s names are examined is the last part of the dictionary between the pages 270-275. In this section, which includes 87 articles, words are evaluated by taking into account the way that a word is taken from Turkish. Popović indicated that he prepared this dictionary with concern that the Turkish words, their origins and meanings in their folk culture and folk songs would some time later be forgotten. In this study, the dictionary of Ðorđe/Corce Popović which is one the Turcism dictionaries that has been published in Serbia is generally evaluated and the section which is comprised of location and person’s name is examined in detail. By evaluating the onomastic data of the words in this section, it will be possible to present the social, historical and cultural relations, language interactions, tendencies and changes between Turkish and Serbian.
