Summary: | This paper deals with the construction of the value of sincerity. It is based on a corpus of four correspondences of couples from the nobility or bourgeoisie in the late nineteenth-century Italy. Through the sincerity issue, the author aims at analysing the links between the construction of individual subjectivity and the forms of social organisation at the very point where three specific areas are articulated: the intimate sphere, the private sphere and the public sphere. Such an approach makes possible to deal with the relationships between the ideas, choices or actions, and the historical conditions in which people evolve and develop their own experiences.
