Description
Summary:The system of characters in F. M. Dostoyevsky’s The Idiot is considered in the article. The system is created according to the principle of opposition and is part of the novel’s visual range. The pictures in the novel belong to the Renaissance which reconsidered the relations between God and man for the benefit of the latter. The system of characters in The Idiot is specific because the main character is placed into the medieval context. It provides an essential condition for the realization of the principle of opposition for both the pictorial subject and the system of characters. In the first case, the original of any picture disappears and an icon is replaced with a photograph. In the system of characters, on the one hand, there are the main character and Nastasya Philippovna with their “weltanschauung” original pictures; on the other hand, there are characters who fail to be original and therefore add to the collection of “copies” in the novel.
