Summary:Reading electronic texts in a foreign language has become an important skill in most professional areas. Electronic literacy is a pedagogical activity which develops both the learner’s linguistic knowledge and his / her ability to communicate and do research on the Internet. This article shows the reasons and how this practice, based on sociocognitive principles and using reading guidelines given by the teaching of Languages for Specific Purposes, has been implemented in the English language programs at CEFET-Campos, RJ. Comments on different aspects of the experience are also provided.
