Description
Summary:This article aims to analyse the effects of international migration on family reorganization, gender relations and the situation of the children of migrants in Ecuador. The first part describes the background against which migration and family transformations take place. It shows the impact of various different source contexts on families by comparing different parts of the country to achieve contrasting views of urban and rural environments, old migration and more recent migration, and different socio-economic levels. In addition, this is placed in relation to different destinations: southern Europe and the United States. A second part analyses the different arrangements for family stewardship depending on who has migrated and how this relates to certain gender assumptions and relations. A third section deals with the perceptions of migration that are built up by the youngsters who are left behind.
