From the perspective of discourse analysis, the controversy concerning norms, has clearly shown that every ideological apparatus has its norms. Considering the social functions of language, one can see that there are no fixed and unchangeable norms; the relative character of norms is evident in contextual situations. On analysing Manual Geral de Redação (General Writing Manual) - of the Folha de São Paulo, Manual de Estilo (Style Manual) - of Editora Abril, and various normative grammar books, it was clear that when it comes to linguistic behaviour, schools preach idealized norms and standardized situations, while for the Manual da Folha de São Paulo, the Folha itself serves as the model. Although based on norms, these are utilized in real situations. It thus becomes obvious that norms in the sense of traditional grammar, as reduction to normative precepts, are utterly useless and dead. What is needed is not the norm, but normal usage, resulting in a live and dynamic language that enables the subject to interact in a diversity of social situations.
