Summary:The past experiences with drug traffickers, militiamen, and permanent police occupation are elements in the singular history of Jardim Batan, a favela located in the neighborhood of Realengo, West Zone of Rio de Janeiro’s city. The perception of the dwellers that state program of Pacifying Police Unity (UPP) has failed generates a new type of temporality. If before they expected the arrival of new goods due to the belief in the absence of state presence, now they long for immediate benefits because they do not believe in the efficiency of government tools in solve. The article is grounded in ethnographic fieldwork realized between 2014 and 2016.
