It is seen in %6-20 of patients hospitalized in psychiatry clinics, most commonly with diagnosis of schizophrenia (%80). Apart from this, it can also be seen in depression with psychotic features, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, alcohol substance addicts and after antipsychotic use. It is stated that its etiopathogenesis is multifactorial, one of them being malfunction of the thirst center in the hypothalamus. It has also been reported that excessive fluid intake disrupts the regulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary axis and causes dysregulation of the hypothalamo- pituitary axis and causes dysregulation in antidiuretic hormone (ADH) secretion.
