The sayings are in Castilian, French, Portuguese, Italian and Catalan and the author states that he collected them thanks to his reading or in conversation. This statement needs to be put into perspective. This collection of sayings based on matters concerning the table, health and good manners is included in a students’ guide, El estudioso cortesano (1573), where the author and pedagogue ofters counsel in order to promote the social mobility of his ex students. Editions of the text such as those of Miguel Navarro Quintanilla (1587), Mateo Repullés (1804), José María Sbarbi (1874) and especially Antonio Castillo de Lucas’s (1965), contain transcription and interpretative errors that needed to be corrected.http://journals.openedition.org/criticon/12906pedagogyhumanismsayingsPalmireno Juan Lorenzo
