Summary:On the basis of the Schumpeterian conception about the characteristics of the innovating entrepreneur, this article offers a general explanation for the weak economic performance followed by the small firm sector within the municipalities of Colima and Villa de Alvarez. The analysis, which considers entrepreneurship as the main variable of explanation, suggests that the small firms have few Schumpeterian characteristics, while prevails a low propensity to innovate and compete, and a high risk aversion.
