The aim of the article is to analyse the tenement buildings as the phenomenon of the culture of everyday life and hospitality sphere of Ukrainian cities.
Research methodology consists of general scientific methods such as analysis, reliability and visibility. The author uses art criticism and cultural and historical approaches to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the architectural and functional features of tenement buildings as the types of urban development of the Ukrainian largest cities at the outset of the 20th century. In the context of general cultural transformations, the author highlights the facilities of tenement buildings to meet the needs of residents and tourists.
Results. There were many tenement buildings in the Ukrainian cities at the outset of the 20th century. They met the housing needs of their inhabitants and served as decorations for urban development. In terms of cultural and historical transformations and the domination of Soviet ideological values, the tenement buildings in Ukraine had disappeared by the middle of the twentieth century. At present the Ukrainians are interested in the planning of revenue and guest houses, in particular, in the vicinity of the city of Kyiv. The stylistics of the design of their interiors varies from loft to minimalism. In addition, guests are offered a diverse range of services: repairing, change of linen, etc. Such services are enriched by the possibility to have a dinner, provided by restaurants, cafes, dining rooms, which are planned as the important elements of the houses’ infrastructure. A remarkable feature of the development of private houses is the reconstruction of the industrial buildings to the needs of revenue and guest houses, which will significantly improve the look of the capital of Ukraine and its tourist attractiveness.
Novelty. In cultural studies, this paper is the first attempt to outline the main trends of studying a tenement building as a cultural and artistic phenomenon of the urban development, the culture of everyday life and hospitality.
The practical significance. The study deepens the knowledge about tenement buildings in the context of their cultural and historical transformations and the revival of interest in their attribute to meet the needs of urban residents and travellers.
