Summary: | Emerging from collective religious sentiment, the Brazilian brotherhoods in their origin were dynamic social organisms and privileged channels of popular expression. The Portuguese absolutist state, as a state of equilibrium of social forces, accurately sized the strength of these groups and sought to incorporate them into their overseas policy, where they began to play the role of legitimating an ideology of domination. The brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament of Santo Antônio do Re-cife, as representative at the level of the colony of the dominant social group, portrays well the picture of the colonial conjuncture in which it arises and the contradictions inherent in such a painting. |
