Summary:This paper, has been elaborated based on ducumental sources,interviews, images and other cultural artifacts, focuses on theproposals of male Catholic Congregations, with special emphasis(focus) on those that promoted rural teachers education, in the midtwentieth century, in the Federal State of Rio Grande do Sul. Itdiscusses the "integral formation of the person" in face of the role of sport in rural normal schools, as well as in reference to the founding principles of the Congregations. It is possible to assert sports practice actuated as a mediating element as well as of integration of the groups and communities, contributing to the evangelizing mission, through the occupation of free time, disciplining the conduct and the conformation to norms an rules. We analize three educational institutions (Rural Normal School of the Archdiocese, Rural Normal School La Salle, and Rural Normal School Murialdo), being demonstrated greater evidence of sports practice by the Rural Normal School La Salle of Cerro Largo. This school, once transformed into a School of Basic Education, abandoned the rural thematics of teacher education, but it kept the preoccupation with sports practice
