Oil and sustainability in Brazil, an intergenerational matter

<em>The aim of this study is to analyse the present discussion in Brazil about the new legislation for the oil reserves in the pre-salt layer in the light of the historical evolution of environmental and energy regulations in Brazil. Based on the principle of sustainable development, we attempt to show the compatibility between the new model and the aims and actions defined in national policies for energy and environment in the Federal Constitution of 1988. The study upholds the construction of a holistic, participative process for the elaboration of national policies, which necessarily contemplates an intergeneration perspective.</em>
