The article features long excerpts from a spring 2016 interview with Martine, a 58-year former teacher currently working as a psychologist under an umbrella company aegis. The twists and turns in her professional and personal history are deemed to have embodied the different labour market developments that she experienced, including a succession and accumulation of employment statuses and activities. After starting her career as a teacher, Martine became a civil servant before assuming a “salaried entrepreneur” status as part of an umbrella company, These experiments with different forms of employment led to her finding herself today at the interface between self-employment and wage-earning. Emphasizing interviews as is often the case for Matériau articles, the aim here is to uncover the different strategies and resources that Martine has used to avoid career insecurity and give meaning to her work.
