Description
Summary:In this document Ms. Honjo analyses the case of the poisoning of over 1000 fish by a former aquarium worker in the Saitama prefecture. The author highlights how the case, which has incurred no legal repercussions or obligations for the aquarium, shows loopholes in the Standard for Rearing and Exhibiting Animals in Japan. The man arrested is charged only with damage to property, as the lives of the fish are only measured in economic terms. This, among other factors, such as the non-legally binding status of the Standards for Rearing and Exhibiting Animals, highlight the need for stronger standards of fish and animal welfare in Japan.
