The novel that bears various discourses is examined on the basis of the function of descriptive texts. Seghers through the descriptive texts about people and events creates staggering impressions on the reader and opens the door to an imaginary world. Seghers with realist narrayive techniques is able to reflect social problems. Especially the environmental descriptions help to understand the psyche of the characters.</p>
