Summary: | This essay is an introduction to the Quay Brothers' poetics. Since Seventies the works of the two filmmakers have investigated the undergrounds of imagery produced by the collapse of all symbolic orders. There are many cultural influences involved in their work: the surrealistic cinema, the central European literature (Schulz, Kafka, Walser...), the artistic avant-garde. Following Shulz's imaginary theory of the generatio aequivoca the Quay Brothers can show the contingency and the unpredictability of the forms generation. In this way they can put the rest of symbolic orders on the same level as the basic materials from which the generatio aequivoca originates.
