Summary:The twentieth-century witnessed a great evolution in clergy’s image under the influence of human sciences. The study of the cases of the United States, France and the Netherlands, undergone in this article, shows that this phenomenon spread worldwide and affected all the judeo-christian denominations. In particular, new « pastoral sciences », whose task was to foster a new expertise on pastoral issues and elaborate new tools to help the clergy in its mission, appeared. They experienced various models of advancement, depending on each country’s politico-cultural background, and contributed ultimately to the reconfiguration of clergy’s image and mission.
