Description
Summary:Objective: To carry out a bibliographic survey on the use of Medical Research Council in the weaning of critically ill patients. Methods: Publications published between 2004 and 2018 were published and published in the National Library of Medicine, PubMed, Latin American and Caribbean Health Science (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), LanTIndeX and pubmed. The search for studies that had as descriptors the terms "critical patient", "muscular weakness", "medical research council", "weaning" and "extubation" in the Portuguese and English languages, individually and in combination. We selected 40 articles for the construction of the text. Results: Very few field studies were found regarding the subject, however the selected studies pointed to the possible relation between the Medical Research Council score and the weaning process. Conclusions: It was possible to identify that there are very few references associating the weakness of the peripheral musculature with the success of weaning. Despite this, it is very clear that it is extremely important to perform early mobilization in order to minimize the consequences that a hospitalization in Intensive Care Unit demands, such as muscle weakness, since once minimized, the benefits both in time of weaning and in the length of hospitalization are evident.
