Description
Summary:Object and purpose of research. This paper discusses various approaches to representation of kinematic viscosity-vs-temperature curve of fresh water (tables and approximating functions) as taken from different publications. The purpose of this study is to identify the optimal representation for practical calculations during model tests. Materials and methods. This paper compares the tables and approximating funcitons for kinematic viscosity-vs-temperature curve of fresh water used by KSRC laboratories and those recommended by ITTC. The comparison is performed both directly and through the analysis of deviations in calculated Reynolds number and friction resistance coefficient of an equivalent plate obtained as per the same formula (Prandtl-Schlichting) but based on different representaitons of kinematic viscosity-vs-temperature curve. Main results. The study shows the deviations due to the difference in curve representations and demonstrates that the error in friction coefficient of an equivalent plate calculated as per the most commonly used tables is negligible. The study also suggests approximating functions describing the curve recommended by the 26
