Summary: | This article intends to support, both analytically and statistically, the occurrence of a given problematic positive economic inflection in the state of Rio de Janeiro beginning in the mid-90 ’s, showing the pivotal importance of the petroleum sector. Furthermore, it stresses the spatial side of economic dynamics favored by the petroleum sector, i.e., its close association with specific regions, and, within them, a few specific cities. And finally, the article emphasizes the importance, no longer of the discussion of the aforementioned economic inflection, but rather of the possibility of a longer effective period as well as the capacity of cities and regions to efficiently make use of funds from petroleum royalties in order to construct economic dynamics which, over the medium and long term, could ultimately allow them to break free from the petroleum sector in question.
