Summary: | This study analyses punishment execution in prison of two penal law systems: that of 1937 and that of 2006 (Law 275). I outline the contradictions between the rationality of the prison as an institution and the rationality of the society outside this institution. This contradiction generates a paradox of the penitentiary institution: preparing individuals for freedom through freedom deprivation. To understand the social prisoners' career I propose the concept of sociability progressiveness, which means that the convicts' progressive recovery of the capacity to live in society (as the official purpose of the punishment states) is marked by the progressive recovery of the capacity to live in the convicts' world.
